Q: Is there a legend explaining all the symbols?
In recent years it has become more feasible than ever to navigate using a smartphone or tablet. Apps have improved to the point where they rival paper charts and chartplotters. With so many good navigation apps available, the question is: which is best for you? There are free apps with basic chartplotting capabilities; reasonably priced apps with advanced waypoint and route management features; and apps with community-authored databases that include points of interest (POI). Ultimately, choosing an app comes down to evaluating which features are important to you and what you’re willing to pay for them.

The emergence of GPS-enabled smartphones and tablet devices has caused problems for GPS technology specialists like Garmin. Much like dedicated MP3 music players, many consumers now see little point investing in dedicated navigation systems when multi-tasking devices can provide a decent service. In early 2012, Garmin moved to counter the smartphone threat with the release of a navigation app of its own to complement its existing dedicated chartplotters.

Active Captain: Having access to Active Captain information is a must for me to be up-to-date on what others are reporting about the conditions of the shallows. It’s also helpful in choosing a marina. When offered by an app, the Active Captain information is stored on your mobile device or tablet and, therefore, does not require cell service or internet to access. Active Captain is currently available on Garmin Active Captain, Navimatics Charts and Tides, AquaMap, and SEAiq.
I like charts and icons that are easy to see and understand. To help in that respect, I have included links to some screenshots of Garmin Active Captain, Navionics SonarChart, AquaMap and SEAiq since they passed the bare-bones test. The screenshot is of the Charleston Harbor area and the area above Beaufort, NC, known as the “confusing area” where the route to Beaufort splits off the ICW. There are lots of buoys that don’t seem to be right at first glance. Judge for yourself how the charts look. For the best experience, be sure to enter full screen mode in your browser (usually by hitting F11) and click on "Slideshow Mode" in the upper right corner of the screen. It looks like this:
